OVERVIEW

Common Japanese grenade design used by infantry in Pacific and China campaigns.

HISTORIAN'S COMMENTARY

Before the Storm

Introduced between 1937 and 1945, Type 97 Grenade was fielded by Japan forces as a fragmentation grenade instrument for close combat and battlefield shaping.

In the Field

Loaded with Fragmentation hand grenade filling and impact/time striker delay system fuzing, this 0.45 kg munition depended on nerve and timing more than machinery. Its effective use envelope reached about 25 meters, with effects spreading near 10 meters.

Historian's Note

On the ground, it gave infantry an immediate burst of shock effect in close-quarter fighting. Its historical value came from local overmatch, but only when placement and timing were right.

DEVELOPMENT

Type 97 production reflected Japanese efforts to field a simple, widely distributable hand grenade for infantry units. Design favored practical wartime issue under constrained industrial conditions.

COMBAT HISTORY

It was used in Pacific and China campaigns for assault, defense, and close-quarters engagements. Employment varied by unit training quality and available supply in isolated garrisons.

NOTABLE USES

  • [01]Japanese infantry use in Pacific island fighting. - Type 97 Grenade employment here depended on timing, distance, and unit coordination more than raw charge size.
  • [02]Assault and defensive grenade employment in China theater. - This use case shows how engineers and infantry turned explosive tools into tactical advantage in constrained terrain.
  • [03]Close-range use in bunker and jungle engagements. - Field application in this context illustrates why placement and doctrine governed real effect.
