Sd.Kfz. 173 Jagdpanther
German tank destroyer combining Panther mobility and the long 88mm anti-tank gun.
Introduced between 1944 and 1945, Jagdpanther entered service as a tank destroyer in Germany armored formations, built by MIAG / MNH.
With 88mm Pak 43/3 L/71, armor up to 80 mm on the front, and a top speed around 46 km/h, this 45.5-ton machine carried both promise and mechanical burden. About 415 were produced for a war that demanded constant replacement.
On the battlefield it was most dangerous when waiting in depth for enemy armor to expose itself. Its legacy is tied to tempo: it could exploit openings quickly, but only while fuel and maintenance kept pace.

The Jagdpanther mounted the long 88 mm gun on the Panther chassis to create a high-performance tank destroyer. Production numbers remained modest relative to wartime demand.
It combined strong frontal protection, mobility, and long-range anti-tank lethality when employed effectively. Mechanical and logistical pressures, plus low numbers, constrained overall strategic impact.
